You maybe should thank a teacher. I don't know. Maybe you taught yourself to read.
In any event, I ran into my favorite student from my class two years ago tonight at this new restaurant at the rio, which is turning into the requisite suburband Disneyland of chain restaurants and retail stores...It's huge and becoming sort of ridiculous. Can't we turn ONE of these spots into a community center or a fruit stand or something? Apparently residents of this county need just one more spot to buy their dreck and eat their chicken wings. And of course, there I am supporting it like the good middle-class citizen I am. I hadn't been to the area for a couple of months, and I get there and all of these BUILDINGS are just THERE - they popped up so fast. I had no idea.
Anyway, graduation was today and the weather was beyond disgusting. It was like Dorothy and Kansas and the blowing house, all people in unfortunate dress-up clothes with umbrellas turned inside out. The wind was just a JOKE. So by the time the day was over everybody involved was just sort of a wreck. I met them at happy hour in retail hell, and ran into this student that I taught a couple of years ago. It was so great. It was cool to catch up with him and hear how his goals had shifted and progressed, how he was doing in his life - even met his girlfriend, who he had talked about in class way back then...He's really creative and bright, and I was glad to catch up on all of his plans. After the week I had, it was nice to top it off with a positive, which served to remind me why I do what I do...Plus - I'm a "kickin'" teacher - or so he told his girlfriend. I think that's good. ; ) Very sweet.
So glad it's Friday. Can't even express it.
