I had a moment during the show tonight - several of them, actually. Patty Griffin is a force of art and nature, and if you ever get the chance to see her, just go. I decided during the show that if it were my last night on earth, it should go thusly: a steak and Italian salad dinner, a triple bill of Patty Griffin, Patty Larkin, and Hem, a couple glasses of wine, a good cup of coffee, great sex, and then poof. Done. That would be all I'd need. Also I wouldn't mind being near water, and I'm talking about an ocean, not a bathtub.
Scott Miller opened. He comes from Knoxville and is fairly entertaining - really good guitar player. He also has a very cool website and I'm so tempted to rip off the design idea but I won't.
Patty came out in this precious green crinoline dress with red shoes, had her red hair in a perfect ponytail, and altogether looked like a Texas-by-way-of-Maine woodland fairy. (who just happens to crush on the guitar as well as the piano, and possess one of the most luminous voices in American music. Unbelievable.) She played for a long time, and appears to be having just a bang-up time at it, which I always like to see. She did play "Mary" (see below) and it was rather vindicating to be one of several people around me wiping my eyes. Also "When it Don't Come Easy" was gorgeous, and affecting, and unbearably sad in a beautiful sort of way.
I will go see her whenever she's around, because this is the kind of live music that makes my life worth living.
