My beautiful friend Samantha Jo made this version of the accent meme video that I just love.
I've never met Sam in person (ed. note after I drove to work and realized I was probably wrong about this -- and now I'm thinking this is a dirty lie, and that I met her at BlogHer New York or somewhere at a BlogHer, but it wasn't QUALITY TIME, you know? So maybe I just think it didn't count. Or maybe I'm just delusional and forgetful like usual. We should probably go with that), but we click on Twitter like nobody's business, and I know without meeting him that her kid is the kind of kid I'd have wanted to have if I'd ever had one. (I've always hoped I could order a boy if I managed to be a mom, and the communication that she and Theo have resonates with me as the kind that I'd have with a child who belonged to me. Intuition is a weird thing.)
Also, things have also been kind of heavy around here for awhile, which isn't exactly accurate, because my in-real-life is a much stranger mix of pathos and humor, and I'm thinking maybe the blog should reflect that more?
I don't know. In any case, I did the accent meme, in spite of my relative hatred of video. Here I am, discussing aunts and terlets and Maryland o-faces. It's as unexciting as that doesn't sound.
It's incredibly long, but there were lots of questions, and not only am I not that concise, but I can also go on and on about words. If you want terse and short, ask me about chemistry or equations or some shit like that. I'll guarantee you 27 seconds, maybe.
Suebob did it tonight too, because I asked. I consider her quintessential California, so we're basically coastal opposites.
Fun! I did the accent vlog a couple of weeks ago. I love hearing the pronunciation differences in the specific words from the list.

You are far too intelligent for me this early in the morning, but I still loved your history lesson.
"Since when do I care about sounding crazy on the internet?" is my new favorite quote.

These are so fascinating. I love watching them!

I grew up in Northern California and I think your accent is more similar to mine than Suebob's is. She doesn't sound like a Californian to me at all!
(I plan to do the accent vlog, I swear! Maybe tonight.)

Laurie, I loved this. Especially the lesson on how to pronounce New Orleans. I blame the songwriters for making Ohr-leens the national norm (I'm looking at you, Billy Joel and Tim McGraw!), because it rhymes with more words than Ohr-lins does.
And "terlet"...I think it comes from the Germans or another ethnic/immigrant group that resided with them in the late 1800s to mid 20th century, because you hear it in areas of NOLA and Queens (NY) where there was a strong German immigrant presence. My grandma always said it (and we made fun of it), but since she's gone, it's nice to hear people say it occasionally.

Okay. I'm an asshole because I'm on my phone 99% of the time and never on the laptop and if I AM on the laptop Theo is all up in my biznass which just makes me crabby when trying to watch a VERY IMPORTANT VLOG. So I haven't been able to sit down and watch until NOW. Just NOW. This very second. And oh my lands I started to cry. First paragraph in. Which of course, out of nowhere, made Bryan all "Um what happened? What's wrong is everything okay can you please verbalize what is making you do that with your face now please?"
I love you. You're beautiful. And you are correct in that we HAVE met literally in passing for a hi/quick hug at BlogHer NYC and no no no it WASN'T quality time like at ALL so I do not count it. Not one bit. Hence why I'm rooting for you to lose your draft with Kristin, have you come a day or two early (job? what job? Money? Huh?) and stay here. It's already decided. It's done.
I don't really know what else to say. You talk good lady friend. I'm honored to know you. xoxo

An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a coworker who has been conducting a little homework on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast due to the fact that I found it for him... lol. So allow me to reword this.... Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending time to talk about this issue here on your website.
