You go Laurie!
I love this series. I have felt like such a failure because I don't have my degree. Now I realize that my path is what I make it and being a failure is relative.

I love that you listened to yourself. I wish I could do that. I hear myself, but I haven't yet gotten the ability to listen. If I could afford to go back for a PhD, I totally would.

Wow, courageous to retry even without support and financing! But it sounds like the second time around you had that most precious of adulthood's commodities, what we all lack in youth - certainty. Not about EVERYTHING, natch, but self-certainty. You knew it was right for you, and that gave you the strength to stick it out. I'm so happy for you, happy that your self-certainty was there for you when other things weren't. Sounds like you had a serious transformative period, after a long relationship and established work palled for you...way to see it wasn't for you, and spreading your wings despite the safety of staying put!

I love this story - thank you for sharing. I'm at a crossroads myself and I keep coming back to the unfinished PhD and the question of credentials. The answer for me isn't to finish that degree, but I am going to continue to sit with the question of what "credentials" mean to me and what kind I want to have. And I am going to remember your story. I may come to you for a pep talk along the way even!!

Whoohoo! Found your blog through BlogHer :)

I always have crazy respect for people who choose to go back and get what they ACTUALLY want! Life is too short to keep chugging on with a job you have no passion for.
